Day Trips In The Area

Mossel Bay is the gateway to the entire Garden Route. The Garden Route is a corner of Africa that is so astonishingly beautiful that it has been called "A Taste of Eden". It is a mosaic of silent, mysterious forests, sweeping lakes and wetlands, empty, unspoilt beaches and narrow, winding passes that lie between Gouritsmond in the West and Storms River in the East. Throughout these fascinating and varied landscapes, the threads that bind them all together are the wonderland of our indigenous fynbos and the warmth, friendliness and hospitality of the people who live here.

African Oceans Manor is situated in the heart of the Garden Route, surrounded by a number of popular destinations where there is plenty to do and see.

George

Nestling below the magnificent Outeniqua Mountains, George is the sixth oldest town in South Africa. The town's central position and close proximity to other towns of the Garden Route, with road, air and rail links to all the important centres in the country. This has resulted in George becoming a major distribution, education and medical centre.

George was selected to host the President's Cup Golfing Championship in 2003, and is classified as one of the foremost golfing destinations in Southern Africa.

Bramble Hill and the George Golf Club are two of the town's premier courses. George airport is just 40 km (about twenty minutes) away from our beautiful establishment.

Knysna

Knysna is one of the Garden Route's best-known travel destinations - situated as it is between lush forests and the shores of the peaceful estuary. It offers many activities and attractions to a wide variety of people. In and around Knysna one will find a selection of fine restaurants, seafood taverns, pubs, coffee shops and eateries. These are all well-suited to match your mood or budget.

For the shopper, there are interesting shops tucked away around every corner, authentic African traders, and for the person with a passion for history, Knysna will intrigue you... The Featherbed Company gives visitors to the Garden Route an unforgettable experience on the Knysna Lagoon.

This Lagoon, more accurately defined as an estuary, has five fresh water rivers flowing into it from the surrounding Outeniqua Mountains. These are met by the surge of sea water from the Indian Ocean through the mighty headlands – known as the 'Knysna Heads'.

These are the grand sandstone cliffs which tower above the entrance to the Lagoon. The Knysna Waterfront encompasses marinas, shopping malls and residential complexes. It is a vibrant, buzzing complex that caters for shopping, exciting dining, or relaxed contemplation. Sitting on the edge of a pier, eating an ice-cream, is a lovely way to spend a little time. Knysna is about 115 km from Mossel Bay.

Oudtshoorn

When you cross the Outeniqua Mountains you enter the Klein Karoo; here you witness a dramatic change of scenery. From the moment you view this rugged landscape, you will be struck by the vastness of the countryside.

If you hope to see ostriches roaming around, you will not be disappointed. This is Oudtshoorn, the 'home of the ostrich', where a visit to one of the ostrich farms in the area could culminate in the thrill of a ride on the back of one of these beautiful creatures.

Safari Ostrich Show Farm is an operating farm where visitors will see large flocks of ostriches in the surrounding fields: all at different stages of their growth. A mere 29 km from Oudtshoorn, at the head of the picturesque Cango Valley, lies the spectacular underground wonder of the Klein Karoo - the Cango Caves.

Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well-known Swartberg Mountains, you will find the finest dripstone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations. Cango Wildlife Ranch is the oldest and biggest cheetah contact centre in the world.

It offers visitors the rare opportunity of interacting with our hand-reared cheetahs and becoming actively involved in saving this species, and others too, from extinction. Their snake park contains unusual and rare reptiles from all over the world, such as the giant albino Burmese Python, the extraordinary-looking prehensile skink (a lizard) and the fearless 4 m King Cobra: the longest and most deadly snake in the world!

Wander among a number of different crocodile and alligator pools accommodating more than 300 Nile crocodiles.

The Klein Karoo National Arts Festival is an annual gathering in March/April, of more than 100 000 lovers of the various arts. They come here for a week of dancing, films, cabaret, classical music, comedy, contemporary music, open-air concerts, plays, displays of the literary arts and poetry.

This is a truly momentous event, enjoying international sponsorship. Taste the fine local wines and the excellent cuisine of the restaurants - meals which could include ostrich meat – all dishes that are exquisitely prepared and available to satisfy every individual taste.

Oudtshoorn is situated approximately 83 km from Mossel Bay.
