We offer a choice of Deluxe Rooms and Junior Suites set in a pristine garden setting as well as the shoe box cottage and Manderson Suite which offer an extra touch of luxury.  All rooms include en-suite bathrooms (with separate bath and walk-in shower), coffee and tea making facilities, direct dial telephones, satellite television, wall heaters and electric blankets.  The veranda and wooden deck extending to the edge of the swimming pool offer magnificent mountain views and is the perfect place to enjoy a light meal, recline on a pool lounger or to sip sundowners while daylight fades.

In the morning we serve a full english breakfast and thereafter offer light lunches. In the evening the restaurant offers a table d'hote menu, served in our candlelit dining room. The menu changes daily with a choice of two starters, two main courses and two desserts, which may be complimented by your choice of more than 25 different wines. Our pub has a great atmosphere and offers a wide selection of alcoholic, as well as non-alcoholic beverages. 

Our lounge is a luxurious and welcoming space. During the winter months the ambience is complimented by a roaring log fire.  Browse through our permanent art exhibition or settle down with one of our wide selection of books available.

Attractions

While at the Manderson enjoy the myriad of activities available in the area. The indigenous Xolora Forest offers superb forest walks, bird watching, mountain biking, horse riding and boldering. Gubu and Wriggleswade Dam are in close proximity to the hotel and activities there include bass and trout fishing, sailing and sunset cruises. There are many places of historical and heritage interest in the area too. These include Mwgali Village, Thomas River Historical Village and the Engine Museum. And for those that are golf lovers, The Stutterheim Country Club is home to what is considered to be one of the country's best rural golf courses.   

Horse Rides

 

 

 

 

Hillside Horses offers exquisite horse trails through the Amatola Mountainside and forest. There are a number of different packages to choose from. These cater for absolute beginners to seasoned pros. Enjoy the fresh mountain air and the beauty of the forests on an invigorating forest ride.

Forest Walks

 

 

 

 

The Kologha picnic site marks the beginning of a four magnificent walks through the Xholora forest. The blue walk is a 3km route on which one would encounter spectacular waterfalls. The yellow walk is a 7km and the red walk is a 17km circular trail which passes through indigenous forest and grasslands and has some breathtaking views. The forth walk is to Anderson Dam where a picnic can be enjoyed in the tranquil surroundings.

 

Cata Community Museum

 

 

 

 

Cata Community Museum is one of the only museums in South Africa to trace the story of the forced land removals and land redistribution. Visitors can visit the museum and ,by arrangement, can be taken on a guided walking historical tour.

 

Fishing

 

 

 

 

Wriggleswade dam is home to the very active Stutterheim Bass Fishing Club. With many annual fishing competitions that, Wriggleswade has become a firm favourite with many bass fishermen countrywide.

Trout fishing is becoming more and more popular at the picturesque Gubu Dam. The dam is surrounded by a pine forest and has exquisite mountain views.

 

Boat Cruises

 

 

 

 

Aquascape offers leisure and sunset cruises on the picturesque Wrigglewade Dam. This is ideal for a family outing, fishing trip or bird watching expedition.

 

Photography

 

 

 

 

Stutterheim is an absolute must for photography enthusiasts. From rolling grasslands to spectacular mountain views and breathtaking beautiful dams and forests, this is the perfect place for a photography expedition.

 

Mountain Biking

 

 

 

 

Guided mountain bike rides or the hiring of mountain bikes can be arranged. There are many different routes to follow through the forest ranging from a leisurely ride to an invigorating adventure.

 

Stutterheim Country Club

 

 

 

 

The Stutterheim Country Club offers what is considered by some to be one of the best rural golf courses in the country.  The country club’s facilities also include squash and tennis courts.

 

Old Thomas River Station

 

 

 

 

Old Thomas River is a restored train station which has been renovated to include a private library, wagon museum, rock art museum, pub museum, the Ramble Restaurant and vintage motor museum. Thomas River is approximately a 20 minute drive from Stutterheim and is great for day trips.

 

Mgwali Village

 

 

 

 

Mgwali Village is the oldest village in Eastern Cape. One can taste traditional food and enjoy true African entertainment and culture.

 

Bird Watching

 

 

 

 

Many people make Stutterheim their destination of choice based solely on its diverse birdlife. Stutterheim has four distinct ecological biomes with endemic and rare birds in each of them. Stutterheim is also home to the endangered Cape Parrot.

 

Stationary Engine Museum

 

 

 

 

The museum is thought to have one of the largest and most comprehensive collection of restored stationary engines, all in mint running condition, in the world. Please ask at reception for more details.

 

Bouldering, Rock Climbing and Abseiling

 

 

 

 

These activities are fast becoming popular pastimes. Abseiling and junior rock climbing takes place at Natural High and bouldering, rock climbing and abseiling take place at the Shire. Ask at reception for more details.

 

Lion Park

 

 

 

 

This is a great day trip for those who have small children. One can interact with many rare animals and enjoy a light lunch at the tea garden. Approximately a 40 minute drive from the hotel.

Amahlathi Conference Room can accommodate 90 delegates and the Amatola Conference Room accommodates 50. Both venues are specifically designed and built for conferencing purposes.  Conference centre equipment available include, digital data projector with surround sound, flipcharts, overhead projector, television and video machine, additional electrical outlets, overhead fluorescent and wall lighting, telephone, wireless internet connectivity, men and ladies toilet facilities as well as administrative support, such as e-mail and internet, faxing, copying and secretarial services. Other services and amenities include a laundry and valet service, packed lunches and picnic baskets, baby cots, baby sitting, a spouses' programme for conference delegates, and a business centre offering secretarial services. Directions

Stutterheim is 83 km from East London on the N6. The hotel is 6.2 km outside Stutterheim. At the traffic lights (only one set) turn on Hill Street, continue on Hill Street (tarred then gravel road) then first on the right on the gravel road and follow the signs to the Manderson.
